Jayhawks’ Melvin Council Jr. Granted Preliminary Injunction Allowing Him 7th College Season – WTOP News
The 24-year-old guard started all 35 games last season and averaged 12.7 points as Kansas fills its 2026-27 roster.
Kansas announced Sunday that Melvin Council Jr. will return for the 2026-27 season after receiving a preliminary injunction against the NCAA in New York.
A New York court granted Council a preliminary injunction allowing a sixth year of eligibility; his lawsuit argues two years at Monroe College should not count against NCAA limits.
During the 2025-26 season, Council started all 35 games for Kansas, averaging 12.7 points, 5.1 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game while earning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
Coach Bill Self confirmed Council will begin practicing immediately, while Tre White's Indiana court injunction also secured eligibility, completing the Jayhawks' roster for the upcoming season.
The NCAA is expected to appeal the decision, leaving Council's eligibility subject to change as the case proceeds. Kansas begins its first exhibition game in less than two weeks.
