'Everyone Is Looking Very Round': Fat Marmot Week Voting Is Underway
The online tournament aims to draw donations for a 65-year marmot study that needs $225,000 to $300,000 to support a Ph.D. student.
Starting Monday, Aug. 24, the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory launched the inaugural Fat Marmot Week to raise critical funds for its long-running research into yellow-bellied marmots in Gothic, Colorado.
Scientists launched the online tournament to secure funding after facing significant federal grant cuts that threaten the 65-year research project, the second-longest-running study of individually marked mammals.
To supplement donations, the team created a G-rated OnlyFans account called OnlyMarms while inviting the public to vote for the marmot that best exemplifies healthy hibernation preparation.
Voting is open through Friday, Aug. 28, with the popular vote winner announced Sunday, Aug. 30; the marmot with the largest estimated weight will be announced August 29.
Researchers noted that poor snowpack and warmer temperatures due to climate change have already caused significant population die-offs, with human-caused climate change making the snow drought about 14 times more likely.
