Medicare launches pilot program expanding access to GLP-1 drugs
CMS will test whether a $50 monthly copay can expand access for eligible beneficiaries and reduce long-term Medicare spending.
- On July 1, 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will launch the 'GLP-1 Bridge Program,' allowing eligible Medicare Part D enrollees to access select GLP-1 medications for a $50 monthly copay.
- Federal law generally prohibits Medicare from covering medications solely for weight loss, prompting CMS to create this demonstration to test whether uniform negotiated pricing improves beneficiary outcomes and reduces long-term spending.
- To participate, beneficiaries must be at least 18 years old and have a BMI of 35 or higher, or a BMI of 30 or higher with conditions such as heart failure or chronic kidney disease.
- Christopher J. Frisina, healthcare regulatory counsel at Alston & Bird, warned that expanding access for telehealth providers could introduce potential avenues for fraud, though he acknowledged CMS implemented due diligence checks.
- The demonstration program runs through December 31, 2027, according to CMS. Aurelia Chaudhury, co-lead of the CMS Cell and Gene Therapy Access Model, acknowledged "there's a lot of interest from patients" in post-2027 plans.
