Medical bosses issue urgent 'do not use' warning on these baby items
The agency said evidence is insufficient and warned the devices may injure infants or mask conditions needing medical care.
On Tuesday, the MHRA issued a Device Safety Information warning advising parents to stop using rectal catheters on babies claimed to relieve gas and digestion issues.
Following expert clinical advice, Alison Cave, MHRA chief safety officer, said there is "not enough clinical evidence to support their safety and effectiveness."
Medical experts have raised concerns about potential risks of injury to infants, including rectal tearing or perforation. While there are no reported cases of serious injury, the MHRA warns the devices might mask underlying health conditions.
Parents and caregivers are urged to dispose of any purchased catheters and seek advice from a healthcare professional, following NHS guidance if concerned about their baby's digestive health.
The MHRA encourages anyone who suspects a child experienced a side effect to report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which helps identify new safety issues and safeguard product quality.
