Measles exposures reported at 4 more Upstate schools as cases continue to rise
The outbreak is driven mainly by unvaccinated individuals with 281 people quarantined across multiple schools, officials said.
- On Friday, the South Carolina Department of Public Health reported eight new measles cases since Tuesday, raising the Upstate South Carolina outbreak total to 84.
- DPH traced much transmission to household contacts, saying 77 unvaccinated individuals are among the outbreak, with seven household members and the eighth case still under investigation.
- Among immediate responses, four newly exposed schools were identified and DPH began notifying students, faculty and staff on Dec. 1; 281 people are in quarantine and two in isolation.
- Officials said notification and quarantine measures began Dec. 1, and students who complete quarantine are scheduled to return to classes between Dec. 11 and Dec. 15; DPH urged exposed people to contact health care providers before seeking care and to stay home if ill.
- Outbreak data show the age breakdown of 84 cases as 18 under age 5, 52 ages 5–17; DPH said measles is highly contagious, with symptoms appearing 7–12 days after exposure and contagious from four days before to four days after rash.
