McLaren to invest $675 million to expand UK manufacturing, launch SUV model
The British supercar maker will expand manufacturing and engineering, backed by Abu Dhabi investor L'IMAD, to broaden its lineup and lift margins.
On Tuesday, British supercar maker McLaren announced a £500 million investment in UK manufacturing to develop new models, including its first-ever SUV, targeting higher profit margins.
Following an acquisition by Abu Dhabi's CYVN Holdings last year, McLaren seeks to reverse a sales decline that saw volume fall to about 2,000 cars in 2025 from less than 3,300 in 2024.
Expanding the product portfolio with an SUV will help lower material costs, McLaren Chief Operating Officer Michael Straughan said, citing growth success at Lamborghini and Bentley in the segment.
Building a new assembly plant in England will create 1,000 jobs by 2032; McLaren CEO Nick Collins said the company will pursue electric vehicles only when customers demand them.
Amid industry-wide restructuring at Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover, Prime Minister Andy Burnham praised the investment, saying McLaren is "doubling down on Britain" with this commitment.
Finally, positive news for the European automotive industry and a carmaker opening a factory instead of closing one. McLaren is going to open a new factory in the United Kingdom to produce its first SUV and compete with brands like Ferrari. The news comes just days after Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced it would cut four thousand jobs.
