McGrath closing on slalom World Cup title after Olympic nightmare
On Sunday, Atle Lie McGrath was fastest in the first run of a slalom, his first race in the discipline since an emotional Olympics exit three weeks ago.
The season-long duel positions Atle Lie McGrath, Vermont-born racer, just one point ahead of Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, Olympic giant slalom champion racing for Brazil, before the March 24 race in Norway.
Armand Marchant held third, trailing McGrath by 0.55, while Noël was seventh with 0.78 to make up.
The event awards 100 points to the winner and 80 to the runner-up, directly influencing season standings as title contenders battle for the slalom crown.
As he waited at the start gate Sunday, the World Cup television broadcast showed a quiet nearby forest, recalling Bormio, Italy, while Loïc Meillard skied out and Timon Haugan straddled a gate.
Norway's Atle Lie McGrath won the slalom at the men's Alpine Skiing World Championships in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Tormis Laine did not make it to the second descent.
