McDonald’s turns its menu screens into a new money-making machine
On Wednesday, McDonald's Corp announced a pilot program testing third-party advertisements on digital menu boards at 450 company-owned U.S. restaurants, monetizing the chain's extensive physical footprint during customer wait times.
Executives aim to grow this into a $1 billion business, modeling the strategy after retail giants like Amazon and Walmart that have successfully built high-margin commerce media networks.
With roughly 14,000 U.S. locations serving about 26 million people daily, McDonald's reaches nearly 90% of the population annually, providing a unique advertising platform for national brands.
Morgan Flatley, McDonald's global chief marketing officer, described the initiative as "an opportunity to generate revenue for the system with little in the way of additional cost, no operational complexity and no disruption to our customer experience."
While some customers expressed frustration on social media regarding ad saturation, the company is expanding other technologies, including its AI-powered ArchIQ assistant designed to identify repeat customers and remember their orders.
