McClatchy laid off 12 journalists at the Lexington Herald-Leader on Thursday, Sept. 10, including its city hall reporter, its health and politics reporter and its high school sports reporter. Kentucky Public Radio reported the cuts eliminated a majority of the newsroom's positions and leave two reporters to cover city and state government. The layoffs come amid nationwide McClatchy cuts and a fight with its unions over an AI rewriting tool.
