Massachusetts West Nile Cases Climb to 11 as Boston and 10 Nearby Communities Stay at High Risk
European health agencies say 86 areas in 16 countries are affected, and France’s locally acquired cases have climbed to 117 this season.
- On Friday, Sept. 25, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced three additional human West Nile virus cases, bringing the statewide total to 11 for 2026. The new patients included men exposed in Suffolk and Middlesex counties.
- Infected mosquitoes remain active across Greater Boston in late September, driving continued transmission risk. Officials identified 11 high-risk communities, including Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville, where residents face elevated exposure.
- State Epidemiologist Dr. Catherine M. Brown reported more than 275 Massachusetts residents have been infected since 2001. Older adults, particularly men in their 50s or older, face the highest risk of developing serious neurological complications.
- Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein, MD, PhD, urged vulnerable residents to use EPA-registered repellent and avoid outdoor activities from dusk to dawn. "People who are older or have compromised immune systems are especially at risk from this disease," Goldstein said.
- Mosquito activity and transmission risks will persist until the first hard frost. "The mosquitoes will be with us until the first hard frost," Goldstein added, advising residents to empty standing water and repair screens.

More cases are already known than in the entire previous year. Diseases have also been reported in Germany.
The European Health Authority (ECDC) is recording more and more infections in its own country – not when travelling to the tropics. 1500 of these cases have already been registered throughout Europe this year.
