Mass. MCAS scores still not back to pre-pandemic levels

Only 13 districts reached pre-pandemic levels in both English and math for grades 3-8, while high school performance declined after MCAS was no longer a graduation requirement.

  • On Monday the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released the 2025 MCAS results at Ottoson Middle School in Arlington, showing Massachusetts students still lag behind pre-pandemic levels.
  • Officials note pandemic-related disruptions and policy changes including Massachusetts voters approving removal of MCAS as a graduation requirement and elevated chronic absenteeism rates last year.
  • Among grade-level results, 42% met expectations, math scores for grades 3–8 held at 41%, and 45% of 10th graders met expectations, with scores declining from last year.
  • The state recognized 63 districts for returning to pre-pandemic levels, and 55% of schools made progress while 280 schools require assistance, with Commissioner Pedro Martinez to evaluate statuses in the coming weeks.
  • A panel assembled by Gov. Maura Healey will propose a new graduation standard by year-end, while Rob Curtin said, `there is some evidence to suggest that there was an impact of motivation as it relates to the results from Question 2 back in November`.
