Marvel Fined $160,000 After Covering Iconic Gaslamp Arch With "Avengers: Doomsday" Ad
Marvel’s contractor was fined after the city said the unpermitted wrap created a safety risk and drew 11 other downtown citations.
- Between July 21 and 26, San Diego officials fined Marvel Studios and its partner, Los Angeles-based Elevue Outdoor, $160,000 for installing an unauthorized Avengers: Doomsday banner over the iconic Gaslamp Quarter Archway during Comic-Con.
- City officials warned Elevue weeks before Comic-Con not to proceed due to pedestrian safety concerns. San Diego spokesperson Richard Berg stated the contractor "knowingly created a safety risk and refused to address it," prompting the escalating citations.
- Daily fines escalated from $10,000 on Tuesday before Comic-Con to $50,000 on Sunday, totaling $160,000. Beyond the arch, San Diego issued $48,500 in additional fines for illegal building wraps this year, more than double the previous year.
- Carl Winston, founding director of the Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, suggested the penalty may be "worthwhile" for Disney while questioning why the city adopted an adversarial approach toward Comic-Con.
- Since the 1970s, San Diego has strictly prohibited outdoor advertising near the convention center, which explains the absence of billboards in the area. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between protecting public spaces and accommodating massive advertising demand during Comic-Con.
