Early Nvidia Investor Mark Stevens Gives $200M to USC for A.I. Push

The gift will fund campuswide AI research and recruit world-class scholars as USC expands work in medicine, security, business and the arts.

  • On Tuesday, the University of Southern California announced a $200 million gift from venture capitalist Mark Stevens and his wife, Mary, renaming the School of Advanced Computing as the USC Mark and Mary Stevens School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Stevens, a USC trustee and alumnus, previously donated $92 million to the university and now scales existing interdisciplinary efforts spanning health sciences, security, business, and the arts.
  • The gift follows $750 million from Michael and Susan Dell to the University of Texas at Austin and $350 million from Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman to MIT for AI-focused research.
  • USC President Beong-Soo Kim stated the funds will help recruit world-class AI talent, with the university offering over 30 AI-related programs and introducing a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence this fall.
  • Stevens, an early Nvidia investor, cautioned that universities must invest quickly to remain competitive, warning that "AI in the wrong hands … can be very destructive" and emphasizing the need for balanced guardrails.
