Cal Raleigh Scratched Late From Mariners Lineup
The Mariners filled the catcher spot with Jhonny Pereda after Cal Raleigh was scratched and Will Wilson went on the injured list with a fractured thumb.
All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh was a late scratch from the Seattle Mariners lineup for Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals at T-Mobile Park.
The Mariners provided no immediate reason for the status change, though Raleigh was the MVP runner-up last season after hitting 60 homers and driving in 125 RBI.
In a corresponding move before the game, the team called up catcher Jhonny Pereda from Triple-A Tacoma while placing infielder Will Wilson on the 10-day injured list with a left thumb fracture.
Pereda, 30, is the only other catcher on the Mariners 40-man roster besides Raleigh and backup Mitch Garver, who replaced the starter in the batting order.
Ominous news preceded the Randy Johnson number retirement ceremony, casting a shadow over an evening originally intended to celebrate the Mariners.
