Marco Vargas Dominating Since Returning From The Injured List

Marco Vargas, Photo by Ed Delany of Mets Minors When the New York Mets traded for Marco Vargas, and Ronald Hernandez, in July of 2023 from the Miami Marlins (David Robertson trade) Vargas’ stock was rising. He had an .899 OPS at the time, however, those numbers regressed after the trade. In 2024 he was limited to only 37 games due to recurring wrist issues and when he was on the field he struggled. In 2025 he did make it to 108 games and was promoted to High-A but he struggled there and played through more injuries. This season, when he went on the injured list at the end of May, he owned a woeful .621 OPS. The struggles continued. However, he is now slashing .271/.345/.389 (.743 OPS) on the season thanks to scorching hot performances since returning from the injured list. Since August 4, Vargas is slashing .409/.413/.614 (1.027 OPS). It was punctuated on Wednesday night as he went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs batted in, and two stolen bases. This is by far the best stretch he has had in the Mets’ organization. Vargas is still only 21 years old. He is certainly not known for his power, but his speed (19-for-19 in stolen base attempts in Double-A) is a threat and he’s as hot as anyone in the organization. He joins an absolutely loaded Binghamton lineup and, in doing so, can hopefully continue this upward trajectory in his development.
