MapQuest GM goes where his app says: Lake Ontario
The mapping company said the original name preserves user familiarity and navigation integrity, and its refusal drew 3 million new app downloads.
On Thursday, MapQuest General Manager Doug Berger visited Toronto, reinforcing his company's decision to maintain the Lake Ontario name despite President Donald Trump's executive order renaming the body of water Lake America.
Following Trump's executive order christening the lake Lake America, MapQuest posted a map with the caption, "We're not changing it," immediately signaling its defiance of the political renaming.
Google and Apple adopted Lake America for U.S. users, while MapQuest's refusal attracted 3 million new users, including many Canadians, who respected the company's decision to maintain integrity.
Berger explained the decision was "pretty easy," citing Canada's proximity and noting the renaming "didn't make a whole lot of sense" as reasons for the company's stand.
Spun out from R.R. Donnelley & Sons 30 years ago, the California-based MapQuest maintains roughly 50 staff, giving it the independence to resist political pressure that larger tech giants cannot.
