  • On Monday, February 2 the UK Government announced Best Start free breakfast clubs will roll out from April, with the Department for Education estimating 300,000 children will benefit.
  • Backed by 80 million funding package targeting the most disadvantaged areas, the programme aims to help working families save money and complements wider measures including expanded childcare and school-based nurseries.
  • Already, schools in the programme have served around 600,000 breakfasts, saving families up to £450 a year, while industry partners Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Weetabix, and Magic Breakfast provide discounts until July 2026.
  • In St Helens North, 1,137 school children will have a nutritious meal each morning as Carr Mill Primary School, Rectory C of E Primary School, and District C of E Primary School join the scheme.
  • New polling shows nearly half of parents prioritise schools offering breakfast clubs, while nearly 38% of single parents feel guilt accessing free support compared to 28% of parents raising a family with a partner.
