Rider Dies After Multi-Rider Incident in Manx Grand Prix Qualifying
One rider died and another suffered minor injuries after a multi-rider crash, and officials have launched a multi-agency inquiry.
On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, 29-year-old Swiss rider Mauro Poncini died following a crash involving two competitors at Cruickshanks, Ramsey, during Manx Grand Prix qualifying.
The Manx Grand Prix Races confirmed the fatality, stating "It's with profound sadness that the Manx Grand Prix Races confirms that one competitor sustained fatal injuries." A second rider was hospitalized with "minor injuries."
Qualifying sessions on the 37.7-mile Mountain Course faced repeated disruptions this week, with Sunday and Monday sessions affected by bad weather and red flags, necessitating Wednesday's contingency schedule.
Prior to Tuesday, Italian rider Salvatore Sallustro was involved in a red-flag crash at Greeba Bridge on Sunday and was transferred to Aintree Hospital Liverpool for treatment.
The Swiss Moto Federation described Poncini as having an "extraordinary heart," stating he "will forever remain part of our motorcycling family" following his death during his maiden MGP year.
