Spain and Manchester City Great David Silva Comes Out of Retirement to Join Hong Kong Team
The 40-year-old World Cup winner signed a short-term deal and could debut next week after Supreme Sha Tin appointed Tom Ballantyne.
On Wednesday, former Manchester City and Spain midfielder David Silva announced his return to professional football, joining Hong Kong Premier League club Supreme Sha Tin after a three-year retirement.
Silva, a 2010 World Cup winner, retired in 2023 following a serious knee injury sustained during preseason training with Real Sociedad in Spain. His decorated career spanned Valencia, Manchester City, and Real Sociedad.
During 10 seasons at Manchester City, Silva won 11 major honors and earned a statue outside Etihad Stadium, though the club now faces charges regarding 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules.
Newly-Promoted Supreme Sha Tin, currently 8th in the 11-team Hong Kong Premier League, recently appointed Englishman Tom Ballantyne as head coach; Silva could make his debut next week.
Silva expressed excitement for the local culture and food in Sha Tin as he prepares to build peak match fitness before Supreme faces the Hong Kong Football Club on Sunday, October 18.
This comeback probably had the least on the note! The former Spanish football national player David Silva returns after more than three years to the football stage and will in future compete for a club in the Hong Kong Premier League.
