Flights diverted after Manchester Airport security breach
Airport staff quickly apprehended the intruder, and officials said 7 flights were diverted and 17 were held in the air.
On Friday night , a person encroached onto the Manchester Airport airfield shortly before midnight, forcing a temporary closure and triggering a police response to the security breach.
Greater Manchester Police arrested the individual at the scene after around 15 minutes, with The Manchester Evening News reporting the incident was mental health-related.
The incident caused seven diverted flights and 17 delayed flights, with aircraft rerouted to Birmingham Airport and East Midlands Airport, including a TUI flight from Cape Verde squawking the 7700 emergency code.
Birmingham Airport confirmed there was no impact on Birmingham Airport operations, while normal operations resumed quickly at Manchester Airport following the incident.
A temporary fix is in place following the security breach, and Manchester Airport confirmed there is no impact on today's schedule after the brief closure.
