High Risk on Manaslu: Two Die in Avalanche; Summit Push Continues » Explorersweb
The deaths bring this season’s Manaslu fatalities to four, as six other climbers turned back because of bad weather, organizers said.
On Saturday night, an avalanche struck Camp 3 on Mount Manaslu in Nepal, killing Indian-German climber Dhruva Jyoti Guha and Nepali Sherpa guide Fursemba Sherpa, expedition organizers said on Sunday.
Mohan Lamsal, managing director of Makalu Adventure, stated the pair advanced from Camp 2 despite adverse weather, while six other climbers from the expedition company chose to retreat to safety.
A rescue team reached Camp 3 after communication ceased, discovering the climbers buried under approximately seven feet of snow, according to Lamsal.
The bodies are expected to be flown to Kathmandu on Monday, weather permitting, bringing the total death toll on Mount Manaslu to four this climbing season.
Mount Manaslu is the world's eighth-highest peak at 8,163 metres, located in Nepal's Gorkha district in the Himalayas; its name derives from a Sanskrit word meaning 'mountain of the spirit'.
An Indo-German climber and a Nepalese guide lost their lives following an avalanche at Camp III in Manaslu, Nepal, at an altitude of more than 8,000 metres.
