Man trapped in submerged car under river
Emergency services responded to Audley Weir in the Royal National Park about 1:15 am Wednesday after a car veered off the road and became submerged with two men inside.
The 20-year-old driver managed to free himself and was taken to hospital for mandatory testing, but his passenger, a man believed to be in his 20s, became trapped in the vehicle.
NSW Police established a crime scene and launched a multi-agency search operation with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit and Marine Area Command to locate the trapped passenger.
A separate fatal yacht rescue in South Ballina and poor night-time visibility delayed police divers from entering the water until first light Wednesday morning.
Audley Road remains closed in both directions between the Princes Highway at Loftus and Waterfall, with motorists urged to use alternative routes while investigations continue.
