Man Who Died when Sign Fell at Music Festival Named as Tributes Paid
A fundraiser and joint police inquiry followed the death, while six others were injured and four were taken to hospital, officials said.
On Friday, August 28, 2026, 41-year-old pastor Robert Guanco died at the Big Church Festival near Steyning after a large sign fell on Washington Road, Sussex Police confirmed.
The incident occurred around 3.40pm, injuring six other people at the festival. South East Coast Ambulance Service assessed the group, taking four to local hospitals, including two with more serious injuries.
Festival organisers cancelled the remainder of the event following the tragedy. Sussex Police are conducting a joint investigation with Horsham District Council, urging witnesses to contact authorities quoting Operation Igloo.
Guanco served as pastor at Jesus the Living Water Church in Eastbourne, described by his congregation as a 'faithful servant of God.' A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than £6,700 towards an £18,000 target.
His family, including wife Isay and daughter Ellie, are mourning the loss of a devoted father as officers remain at the scene to support the coronial process and ongoing investigation.
