Passenger Detained at Newark Airport After Altercation on United Airlines Flight, Police Say
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate after the passenger was detained and taken for psychiatric evaluation, while no other injuries were reported.
A United Airlines passenger allegedly attacked a crew member and attempted to access the cockpit on a flight arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport from the Dominican Republic on Saturday evening.
Port Authority Police Department officers detained the 48-year-old man upon arrival and transported him to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation, according to authorities.
Air traffic control audio captured the pilot reporting the passenger attacked a flight attendant and was "trying to access the flight deck" during the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the incident; passengers may face criminal charges or fines of up to $43,658 per violation depending on severity.
Nearly 500 unruly passenger reports have been filed this year; FAA data shows reports peaked at 5,973 in 2021 before steadily declining since.
