Man dead, woman airlifted to hospital after Cavan crash
Gardaí are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage as they investigate the collision, while the road remains closed for a technical examination.
On Monday, August 10, Donegal All-Ireland winner James McHugh died following a collision between a car and a van on the N3 at Drummallaght, while his wife Noreen was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries.
A celebrated member of Donegal's 1992 All-Ireland SFC winning team, McHugh played alongside his brother Martin and worked as a network technician for the ESB.
McHugh is the 113th person to lose their life on Irish roads this year, 12 more than in the same period last year, while the van driver was treated for minor injuries at Cavan General Hospital.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage from the N3 between Virginia and Cavan, particularly between 1pm and 2pm, to contact Bailieborough Garda Station on 042 969 4570.
Tributes poured in for the sportsman, with 1992 winning manager Brian McEniff describing McHugh as a "fine man" with the "heart of a lion," while Donegal TD Pearse Doherty called the news "heartbreaking.
