Soccer-Man City Could Face Years of Legal Battles After Premier League Verdict, Experts Say
Manchester City’s appeal could trigger years of legal disputes and compensation claims from clubs that say they lost income or promotion chances.
On Tuesday, The Premier League announced an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of breaching financial rules over a nine-season period spanning 2009 to 2018.
The Premier League alleged City used "sham" agreements to artificially boost income and reduce reported costs by more than £900 million over nearly a decade, enabling higher player spending.
City protested their innocence, stating they "diligently respected due process" for eight years, and must appeal the commission's findings before Friday, October 2 regarding the 115 charges.
Sports barrister Yasin Patel suggested rival clubs may sue for loss of income, citing the Burnley-Everton case where Everton paid around £35 million in compensation.
A newly appointed three-person panel will hear City's appeal, while sports lawyer Alex Goodchild debated whether procedural leaks provide grounds to challenge the process.
