Man charged with five counts of attempted murder linked to terrorism
Police Scotland said counter-terror officers are investigating after five people were hurt and more than 90 faith groups were contacted.
On Monday, Lewis Hawkes appeared in Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with five counts of attempted murder linked to terrorism. The 36-year-old made no plea and was remanded in custody.
Five people were hurt across Edinburgh on Friday night in attacks suspected to have an anti-Muslim motivation. Two men were stabbed "multiple times" at Broomhouse Mosque, while three others were attacked on Leith Walk.
Police Scotland confirmed an investigation led by counter-terrorism officers is ongoing. The Crown Office stated all charges are aggravated by reason of having a terrorist connection.
Officers have spoken to more than 90 multi-faith organisations across Edinburgh to address community concerns. Affected businesses have also been contacted by Police Scotland.
Hawkes was committed for further examination and remains in custody ahead of another court appearance within eight days. This legal process will determine next steps in the terrorism-linked case.
