Man Charged over Stabbing Death of 90-Year-Old Woman
Sergei Mitnik was refused bail after police said the 47-year-old was known to the 90-year-old victim and the killing was domestic violence-related.
On Saturday, 47-year-old Sergei Mitnik was arrested and charged with domestic violence-related murder following the death of his 90-year-old grandmother, Valentina Spivak, at her Bondi Beach unit.
NSW Police officers were called to a unit on Chambers Avenue, Bondi Beach, about 5.15pm on Saturday, where they found Spivak with fatal wounds to her throat and torso.
Neighbors George Clifton and Caroline Engesser described Spivak as a "nice, quiet woman," while Detective Superintendent Jodi Radmore called the killing devastating for her family and the wider community.
Facing the Bail Division Local Court on Sunday, Mitnik was refused bail after his lawyer raised mental health concerns and noted he had been taking the weight-loss drug Ozempic.
Detective Superintendent Jodi Radmore confirmed there was no known history of domestic violence between the pair, although Mitnik had a domestic violence history involving another person.
