Man charged for murder of pregnant woman in Seattle found not guilty by insanity
Cordell Goosby was found legally insane at the time of the June 2023 shooting and will be committed to a state psychiatric hospital, an outcome experts say is rare.
- On Friday, the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said the defendant was found not guilty by reason of insanity and will be committed to DSHS for treatment at Western State Hospital.
- At a red light in Belltown, the couple's car was fired into on June 13, 2023 at Fourth Avenue and Lenora Street; Eina Kwon, 34, restaurant owner, was eight months pregnant and died with her unborn daughter, while Sung Kwon, 37, was wounded.
- Psychologists' reports document that both defense and prosecution mental-health experts agreed Goosby was legally insane, citing a schizophrenia-spectrum diagnosis, prior hospitalizations, delusions, and damaged property.
- He could remain committed for up to life, with confinement subject to ongoing evaluations by state officials, and any privileges or release requests must notify prosecutors and King County Superior Court and be reviewed by the state's Public Safety Review Panel.
- Under Washington law, prosecutors said they could not charge the unborn child unless born alive, and the defense noted the rarity of insanity pleas succeeding in felony cases, invoked less than 1% of the time with about 25% success, according to Mental Health America.
