Mexican Man Indicted on Federal Gun Charge After Dallas ISD Officer Shot Near Sam's Club, Prosecutors Say
Federal prosecutors say Jose Santiago Pantoja-Morales grabbed an officer’s gun and fired once, striking the officer in the leg.
- On Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas announced a federal grand jury indicted Jose Santiago Pantoja-Morales, a 27-year-old Mexican national, on a charge of unlawfully possessing a firearm.
- Authorities allege Pantoja-Morales shot 39-year-old Dallas ISD officer Justin Jones in the leg during a struggle on August 6 after Jones stopped to assist him along the LBJ Freeway.
- Investigators say the suspect grabbed Jones' firearm, firing once and striking the officer in the femoral artery; another Dallas ISD officer treated the wounded officer before his transport to Parkland Hospital.
- U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould stated, "Every day, we ask the men and women who wear the badge to stand between good and evil," pledging full accountability for the violence against the officer.
- Sammy Garcia, a witness at a Sam's Club, told CBS News Texas shoppers were "very nervous, very scared" during the lockdown. Pantoja-Morales, who previously faced an aggravated assault charge, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
