At least 50 soldiers and five mercenaries from the Russian Africa Corps have been killed by jihadists in Mali, local security sources said on Monday.
At least 50 Malian soldiers were killed today, with an armed attack on a major base of the Malian army in the centre of the country last week.
Since 2012, Mali has been facing a profound security crisis, fuelled by the violence of jihadist groups, their Tuareg independence allies of the Azawad Liberation Front and community criminal groups.
The human impact is growing after a massive offensive by the Islamic and Muslim Support Group (JNIM) against Malian soldiers and members of the Africa Corps in the centre
Several dozen Malian soldiers were also taken prisoner in the attack on Thursday, according to several sources contacted by AFP.
