Italian Soccer Chief to Lose Job but Stay as Special Administrator
- On Tuesday, the Italian Olympic Committee placed the Italian Football Federation under extraordinary administration, with President Giovanni Malago stepping down to serve as special administrator and resolve weeks of governance upheaval.
- Legal inquiries questioned Malago's June election because he was not a registered FIGC member at the time, triggering administrative friction despite his winning over 68 per cent of the vote.
- UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin warned against political interference during the dispute, which complicates preparations for the 2032 European Championship and recovery from missing three consecutive World Cups.
- Under the compromise, Malago assumes the role of emergency commissioner to oversee daily operations and navigate the federation toward new elections within three months.
- New elections will occur no later than January 31 next year, with Malago remaining eligible to stand as a candidate after his formal administrative standing is regularized.
