How Parents Can Save Under September's New School Uniform Rules
Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Education Secretary Lucy Powell will implement new school uniform rules starting next month, limiting compulsory branded items to three per pupil, or four for secondary schools if one is a tie.
The Labour Party government initiative aims to reduce living costs for families, with Prime Minister Burnham stating, "Free breakfast clubs and cheaper uniforms will help parents and tackle some of the extra costs that make life more difficult."
Frank Young, Chief Executive of Parentkind, noted "millions of parents are struggling with added school costs," as primary uniforms cost around £315 to £340 annually and secondary costs reach around £442.
According to the Department guidance, headteachers should not exclude pupils unable to comply with uniform policies due to financial reasons, ensuring children retain access to classroom teaching and extracurricular activities.
Parents can check retailer apps for unused loyalty rewards before shopping to offset rising uniform expenses, as research from Antavo's Global Customer Loyalty Report 2026 found around 12 per cent of points lapse annually.
