Coastal road swept away into the sea in Devon
Repeated storms caused about 200 meters of the A379 Slapton Line to collapse into the sea, with repair costs expected to reach tens of millions of pounds, officials said.
- Overnight on Monday, February 2, a section of the A379 Slapton Line between Torcross and Slapton collapsed, with around 200m washed away and part of the public car park lost.
- After repeated storms, Goretti, Ingrid and Chandra and high tides undermined sea defences, while repair works last week were hit by further wild weather that swept the road into the sea.
- Drone footage by Dan Coleman of Image Three Sixty shows road and sand cracking toward the sea, while local residents described the scene `like a bomb has gone off` and Caroline Voaden, MP for South Devon, called it `the news that we've all been dreading`.
- Devon County Council Leader Julian Brazil said repairs could cost tens of millions, and the county can't afford to rebuild the road, while Start Bay Inn closed today due to damage.
- Engineers and Environment Agency teams are on site, and Caroline Voaden is in Westminster seeking an emergency Department for Transport meeting amid flood warnings for Wednesday and Thursday.
