MLS Players at 2026 World Cup: Led by Messi, League Sets Record
The league’s 44 active players at the tournament mark a record and include eight each on the U.S. and Canada rosters, officials said.
Major League Soccer will be represented by a record 44 active players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, surpassing the previous record of 36 players set at the 2022 Qatar tournament.
Beyond active roster members, 103 total players participating in the tournament have spent time within the MLS developmental pathway, representing 21 of the league's clubs and 17 different countries.
Star power includes Inter Miami CF's Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul pursuing a title defense for Argentina, while the United States and Canada national teams each feature eight MLS representatives.
Several World Cup matches will occur in MLS home stadiums, including Atlanta United's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Seattle Sounders' Lumen Field, and the Vancouver Whitecaps' BC Place, providing significant recruitment opportunities for the league.
MLS ranks as the league with the most players in the Western Hemisphere, while emerging talents like Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter could earn increased roles during the tournament.
