AMERICAN FAIR TAKING SHAPE
The 16-day event has drawn cancellations from headlining acts and several states over concerns about politicization and high costs, organizers said.
On June 25, the 'Great American State Fair' begins on the National Mall in Washington, but Maine will not participate, joining nearly 10 states that opted out of the celebration backed by President Donald Trump.
Financial hurdles and political concerns drove Maine's decision, as officials cited 'half a million dollars or more' in estimated costs and discomfort with the event's increasingly partisan nature under organizers Freedom250.
Nearly 10 states, mostly led by Democratic governors, have opted out of the fair, which requires states to fund and staff their own exhibits; some, like Illinois, are represented by local organizations instead.
Criticizing performers who withdrew as 'overpriced singers,' Trump rebranded the fair's July 4 celebration as a rally, while sponsors including Lockheed Martin fuel concerns about the event's politicization.
Freedom250 emerged from a Trump 2025 executive order, distinct from the nonpartisan America250 commission created by Congress; the fair runs through July 10, promising pavilions, rodeo performances, and military flyovers.
