Maharashtra MLC Polls: Mahayuti Sweeps Legislative Council Polls
The ruling alliance’s sweep included six unopposed winners and one rebel victory that exposed tensions within Mahayuti.
On Monday, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance swept the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, winning 16 of 17 contested seats. The coalition secured overwhelming control despite one independent victory in Nashik.
In Nashik, BJP rebel Gokul Gite defeated the official Shiv Sena nominee, Narendra Darade, securing 357 votes against Darade's 248. The upset occurred despite senior alliance leaders repeatedly urging Gite to withdraw his candidacy.
According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP claimed 13 seats, while the Shiv Sena and NCP secured two and one seats respectively. Six candidates were elected unopposed, cementing the alliance's legislative majority.
Defeated nominee Darade alleged that alliance partners failed to transfer promised votes, claiming betrayal. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde faced this setback on the same day he expanded his party's Lok Sabha strength.
Failing to secure a single victory, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi suffered a complete shutout. The result demonstrates Mahayuti's electoral dominance, though the Nashik outcome exposes unresolved internal tensions within the ruling coalition.
