The milestone gives Maersk real-world data on ethanol fueling infrastructure, sourcing and supply chains as the company explores lower-emission shipping fuels.
- Maersk recently completed the first ship-to-ship commercial ethanol bunkering of a container vessel in the United States, using 100% U.S.-produced corn ethanol aboard the Tangier Maersk.
- Because ethanol and methanol share similar properties, existing methanol-capable dual-fuel marine engines can operate on ethanol with little or no modification, building on previous trials aboard the Laura Maersk and Antonia Maersk.
- POET, the world's largest bioethanol producer, supplied the fuel, while Kirby Corporation and the Port of Houston provided critical infrastructure and coordination for the bunkering operation.
- Also on Monday, Growth Energy released a report identifying ethanol as technically ready for commercial shipping, though researchers noted that fueling infrastructure remains a significant obstacle.
