Macron Brands Brexit the 'Biggest Lie of the Last 30 Years'
Macron said Brexit was a false promise as Labour figures debate whether Britain should seek closer ties or full EU membership.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham broke a long-standing taboo by proposing Britain could rejoin the European Union, prompting French President Emmanuel Macron to declare in English: "Welcome back."
At his party's annual conference on Tuesday, Burnham claimed Britain's 2020 departure had done "more harm than good" and triggered "a decade of low growth."
Recent polling from Survation shows 55 per cent of voters would opt to rejoin if a referendum were held, while Burnham suggested joining the European single market or going "all the way."
Responding to the potential return, Spain's Sanchez said Spain would "open its arms again to a brotherly people," though expert David Henig noted Burnham remains bound by Keir Starmer’s 2024 manifesto ruling out single market re-entry.
While figures like Tony Blair and London Mayor Sadiq Khan push for membership, critics warn of a re-run of bitter "Brexit wars." The next general election is not expected until 2029.
