Low-key funeral held for giant of the art world David Hockney
His publicist said only his partner and great-nephew attended, and memorial services will begin in London next spring.
Artist David Hockney died peacefully at his London home on June 11 at age 88, his publicist Erica Bolton confirmed. His private funeral has already taken place, attended only by partner Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima and great-nephew Richard Hockney.
Over a seven-decade career, Hockney became a defining figure of the pop art movement, renowned for vibrant Yorkshire landscapes, Los Angeles swimming pool paintings, and experimental iPad portraits. He consistently defied artistic conventions to pursue his own path.
Most of Hockney's works will now be gifted to foundations and public institutions to preserve his legacy, Bolton said. In 2026, he became one of the few non-French citizens awarded officer rank in France's Legion d'Honneur.
Memorial services celebrating his life will begin in London in spring 2027, followed by events in Yorkshire, Paris, and Los Angeles. Bolton stated these arrangements are "in accordance with David's wishes," respecting his loved ones' privacy.
Exhibitions marking what would have been his 90th birthday are planned at major institutions, providing the public their first major opportunity to assess his full artistic contribution. These displays, alongside memorial services, will celebrate his seven-decade legacy.
