Louisiana quarterback Lunch Winfield opened scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, while Arkansas State responded when quarterback Trey Owens connected with Jaylen Bonelli for a 21-yard touchdown to lead 10-7 at halftime.
Running back JJ Garner pushed The Ragin' Cajuns ahead 17-13 with a 13-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, but Red Wolves running back Solomon Baggett answered with a 6-yard scoring run to create a 20-17 advantage.
Sterner tied the game at 20 with a 25-yard field goal with 5:38 remaining; Winfield then orchestrated a 73-yard drive in the final moments to set up the winning kick.
The Red Wolves return to Centennial Bank Stadium on Thursday to face South Alabama, while Louisiana-Lafayette travels to Louisiana Tech on Saturday for their next matchups.
