Longtime Dem Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to resign months into new term
On Thursday, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced she will resign effective June 30, stepping down as the first Black woman to lead North Carolina's largest city since her 2017 election.
Lyles has spent more than 30 years in Charlotte government, including two terms on City Council and service as Mayor Pro Tem from 2015 to 2017 before becoming mayor.
"Serving as Charlotte's mayor has been the honor of my life," Lyles said, citing a desire to spend time with grandchildren while reflecting on achievements in economic growth and neighborhood investment.
"By leaving early, the voters will have more time to learn about their candidates," Lyles said, confirming she will not endorse a successor while expressing confidence in the administration's transition management.
Although Lyles was up for re-election next year, she will not run again; "Our city is strong, our trajectory is positive," she said, declaring it the right moment for new leadership.
