M5 Traffic: Motorway Reopens 14 Hours After Crash and Fuel Spill
National Highways said the closure will last into the morning while fuel is transferred and repairs are carried out after the crash.
On Tuesday, May 5, a collision between a fuel tanker and a car closed the M5 southbound between J22 near Burnham-on-Sea and J23 near Bridgwater after the crash occurred at 4.30am.
National Highways reported a 'large diesel spill' and barrier damage following the accident, prompting Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service crews to assist Avon and Somerset Police at the scene.
South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust conveyed two patients to Musgrove Park Hospital, while National Highways confirmed severe delays in excess of 2 hours 30 minutes along the M5 southbound.
Resurfacing and barrier repairs are required before the road can reopen, as recovery vehicles work to transfer the 32,000 litre fuel load from the damaged tanker to a replacement vehicle.
Motorists should follow the Solid Diamond diversion symbol by exiting at J22, taking the A38, and using the A39 to re-join at J23; "Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey," a spokesperson advised.
