London mayor Sadiq Khan hits out at 'misinformation' as new figures show fall in crimes

London's homicide rate fell 17% to a 10-year low with violent crime down in every borough, attributed to policing and prevention efforts, despite political disputes over safety claims.

  • Earlier this month, Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, hit back at politicians after data showed 8,749 fewer injury crimes, a drop of nearly 12%, over the past year.
  • In the 12-month period to June this year, the homicide rate fell 17%, reaching a 10-year low below rates in Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Madrid and major US cities.
  • Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Rachel Williams said police officers are arresting more than 1,000 additional suspects monthly and London's violence reduction unit delivered over 450,000 opportunities.
  • Conservatives rejected claims London is safer while Donald Trump recently criticised the mayor, prompting Sir Sadiq to say, `I think President Trump has shown he is racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic, and he is Islamophobic.`
  • Longer-Term trends show firearms discharges are less than half what they were seven years ago, and Londoners face 26.4 offences per 1,000 population versus 31.9 across England and Wales.
