F1 Returns From Break with Dutch GP and NASCAR Heads to the Magic Mile
Joey Logano said the win keeps him in position for another title run as the playoff field tightens, with 151 laps led at Richmond Raceway.
On Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, Team Penske driver Joey Logano won the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway, securing his second victory of the season and strengthening his NASCAR Cup Series playoff position.
Logano has surged from 20th to 9th in the standings over the past six races, flipping the narrative on elimination playoffs that were in place for 12 years and positioning himself as a title contender.
Crew chief Paul Wolfe credited Logano with buoying morale when the team notched only two top-five finishes in the first half of the season. "There are times you see teams break," Logano said, "and it doesn't take much longer running the way we were until something probably was going to break."
Following the race at Richmond, teammate Ryan Blaney moved into second in the standings, while Chase Elliott completed the top five, leaving the provisional Chase field largely unchanged for the fourth consecutive race.
Racing Insights, a NASCAR analytics firm, ran more than 25,000 computer simulations showing champions starting in the top six win 85% of the time, underscoring the importance of Logano's ninth-place position heading into the 10-race title run.
