CHP to Increase Patrol During Statewide Maximum Enforcement Period: See When
CHP officers will increase patrols and remove suspected DUI motorists, after more than 500 arrests during last year’s 12-hour operation, the agency said.
Starting at 6 p.m. Friday, the California Highway Patrol will launch a 12-hour Maximum Enforcement Period across Southern California and the rest of the state, with all uniformed personnel patrolling to identify and remove impaired drivers through 5:59 a.m. Saturday.
Alcohol- and drug-impaired driving contributed to an average of nearly 800 fatal crashes each year and more than 39,400 injury crashes on California roads from 2022 through 2024, according to the CHP's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System.
Last year's Halloween weekend enforcement operation resulted in more than 500 DUI arrests and nearly 2,000 speeding citations, including 96 for drivers exceeding 100 mph. Abnormally slow driving, lane drifting, or near-collisions often indicate impairment.
"One impaired driver can change or end a life in an instant," CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said, warning that impaired driving is preventable and urging drivers planning to drink to arrange a sober ride home instead.
The public can help keep California's roads safe by reporting suspected impaired drivers to 911 with vehicle descriptions and direction of travel. "Together we can help keep California's roads safe for everyone," the CHP stated.
