Victim Loses £50k in Scam as Cumbria Police Urge Residents to Be Vigilant
Police recovered more than $153,000 after an attempted scam and warned residents about increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes, authorities said.
The Bristol Virginia Police Department successfully recovered more than $153,000 in an attempted scam case, preventing the funds from reaching criminals through coordinated intervention efforts.
Courier fraud relies on deception, with fraudsters posing as police officers or bank employees to gain victims' confidence before pressuring them to move money into a so-called "safe account."
Victims are often instructed to withdraw cash or purchase high-value items and gift cards. Police noted that fraudsters can be so persuasive that "victims struggle to believe genuine police officers or bank staff when they try to intervene."
Anyone suspecting they have been targeted should report it by calling 101, while in emergencies, individuals should immediately dial 999 to reach authorities.
Residents are encouraged to discuss courier fraud risks with older relatives, as a simple conversation could prevent victimization. Those without their bank's number can call 159 to connect directly.
The Crime Suppression Service appealed today to citizens to be cautious due to the increasingly frequent occurrence of criminal offenses involving phone calls, as well as to report any suspicious case to the police without delay.
