LIVE BLOG: Chiefs take DE Mason Thomas at #40
Mason Thomas brings 17 sacks and second-team All-American honors to a Chiefs edge group that needed depth entering the offseason.
On Friday night, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Oklahoma edge rusher R Mason Thomas with the 40th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Prioritizing defensive talent, the club previously selected cornerback Mansoor Delane and defensive tackle Peter Woods in Thursday's first round of the draft.
Standing 6-foot-2 and 249 pounds, Thomas recorded 15.5 sacks and 25 tackles for loss over two seasons as a starter under coach Brent Venables.
"I was surprised, I was excited," Thomas said during a Friday Zoom call, noting he had a formal meeting with the Chiefs but didn't expect the selection.
Thomas adds depth to a pass-rush unit that includes George Karlaftis, Ashton Gillotte, Felix Anudike-Uzomah, and Tyreke Smith on the current roster.
