Graeme McDowell Hopes LIV Can Move on From Controversy
McDowell said he regrets his early defense of the Saudi-backed circuit as LIV confronts doubts about future financing and sustainability.
At the LIV Golf Virginia event this week, 46-year-old Graeme McDowell admitted he regrets his early "growing the game" comments, acknowledging he joined the tour for financial reasons.
Having spent more than £4.6 billion since 2022, the Public Investment Fund announced plans to withdraw financing by year-end, leaving the Saudi-backed tour's future in doubt.
McDowell characterized the league's initial spending as "a little crazy," noting prize money reached £20 million per event while the tour must transition to a self-sustaining business model.
Bryson DeChambeau is contemplating a return to the PGA Tour or expanding his YouTube channel, reflecting broader player concerns about job security if the circuit shuts down.
Hoping to shift the "nasty" narrative away from Saudi Arabia, McDowell said he wants LIV to flourish as "a viable golfing product" with U.S. investment replacing Riyadh's backing.
