Little League reflections reveal need to 'keep sports about kids'
Steve Borelli says youth sports should build sportsmanship and resilience, not pressure, after 10 years coaching his two sons.
TODAY columnist Steve Borelli, known as 'Coach Steve,' argues youth sports should remain focused on children rather than parental pressure, claiming the current climate loses perspective by pushing kids to specialize.
Spending 10 years managing his sons' baseball and basketball teams, Borelli learned that the most valuable moments involve conversations about sportsmanship after tough losses, helping children carry life lessons into adulthood.
MLB All-Star Todd Frazier noted "no one's getting scouted at 12-years-old," supporting the view that early specialization is unnecessary, while Borelli's son played collegiately despite never being selected for a Little League All-Stars team.
Borelli advises parents to allow children to work through failures and avoid yelling instructions from the stands, which can frustrate young athletes and lead them to quit.
Through his weekly USA TODAY column, 'Ask Coach Steve,' Borelli hopes families continue finding opportunities for connection on baseball diamonds, ensuring sports remain an inclusive environment for all children.
